Brick Walls
To being the process of creating our brick walls we discussed with Mary a variety of ways that it could be done. However for our production we wanted to keep our budget fairly low and as we had a large amount of brick walls to create we needed to keep it cheap. So working with scrim foam and polyfiller, we experimented with a variety of ways to create the look of bricks.
After experimenting with different thickness and shape of foam we decided that it would work for the bricks and just needed to be tweaked so that it looked right for the set.

Another major part of the bricks was creating the "mortar" to go in between the bricks. We were lucky that Mary had left over polyfiller in the studio so we experimented with using that. It worked really well so we went on to try different mixtures of colours in it. We found that coffee coloured it really nicely along with a small amount of red and yellow acrylic paint.
So our final decision was to go with cut scrim foam bricks, with polyfiller, acrylic and coffee "mortar". The bricks would then be coloured with red-brown acrylic paint. So now we were ready to get the wall production line started!
So once all the bricks had been glued down it was time to add the mortar! With a large batch of the polyfiller mixture we were ready to go.
Bec had the smart idea of using a cake icer to put all of the mortar in between the bricks. It worked exceptionally well and helped speed up the mortar process. |
It was then time to paint the bricks and get them ready to go under camera. We went with a red-brown acrylic mix and used both a sponge and brush to get the colour onto the bricks. The sponge gave a good cover over the bricks and then using the brush enabled us to put thicker, darker patches onto the brick.
Ta-dah! All the brick walls finally glued, mortared and painted. This now let us begin getting some close up shots of the animation done.
